Flinders Islands January 2015
Our first stop once leaving Eden was Killikrankie at the top of Flinders Island. A beautiful bay with crystal clear water and fine white sand. But, sadly to cold for any thoughts of swimming. Here we caught up with Lahara, a classic wooden boat bound for the Hobart festival . On board were three guys enjoying their sail south sans wives. They joined us onboard for dinner and enjoyed MS’s lovely new clears, meaning we could sit quite warmly in the cockpit through bitterly cold summer winds. It was down in these latitudes that the clears were an extremely appreciated luxury as we weren’t confined to quarters below.
There is a great little cafe ashore run by one of the islanders who cooks if there’s anyone around. We enjoyed a lovely meal here surrounded by Wallabies in the evening and with the added bonus of seeing a wombat in the bush on the way back down to the dinghy.
After Killicrankie we left for Port Davies in the Flinders Group, another beautiful white sandy bay. Stopped there for one night and then onto Badger Island for a night before heading across to Tasmania. We experienced short sharp seas through the Banks Strait, and lots of weed which soon got caught up around the keel. After an overnight passage we arrived in WineGlass Bay at 5am.
