Lombok to Wera July 2015
So after a bit of a sad goodbye to Medana we left on Sat 11 June. Sailed overnight and anchored at a small island called Moyo. Great snorkelling just off the back off the boat. Lots of live coral and varieties of tropical reef fish. Morg and I were in the water for 2 hrs it was so clear and warm. Stayed here for a few days enjoying the snorkelling then moved onto Kilo on north Sumbawa.
We went for a walk through the village and Morg got mugged by the villages wanting their photo taken with him. A lack of tourists in this area I’m guessing. He gets a bit overwhelmed as the women keep trying to kiss him and play with his hair. I overcame my fear of pavillion riding and Morg and Ijumped on the back of a scooter with Warren on the back of another and we went for a tiki tour along the coast. It was great, the best way to travel. Not uncommon to see a family of 3 or 4 on one small scooter. No helmets, toddlers stand up at the front and babys squashed between mum and dad. Our drivers were very sedate and it was amusing to see the locals do a double take when they saw us honkies being doubled, they’d all wave and laugh at us.
After Kilo we sailed for Wera, about 30 m along the coast. The village here builds traditional wooden boats, so we decided to go ashore and have a look. In all the bays we are visited by kids in their small dug out canoes calling ‘hello mister’. We towed a few of the boys who came to the boat in their dug out back to shore with the dinghy, they were grinning from ear to ear. They love pencils and schoolbooks which Warren stocked up on his last visit home. The girls love beads and hair tyes and the boys want caps and fish hooks. They are beautiful smiling chidren who wouldnt know what lego or barbie dolls are, their life is mucking around on the water and having fun outside.
